The route of the 77 km Route des Crêtes was decided during the 1914-18 war for strategic reasons. It passes through the Grand Ballon, the highest point of the Vosges massif, the Hohneck and the Col de la Schlucht. Today, it offers magnificent panoramas: lakes, valleys, peaks... It's not uncommon to be able to observe the Black Forest and the Alps chain from various points along this route.
The Route des Crêtes is closed to traffic every year from mid-November for the entire winter period.
